Decades ‘08 Challenge

Posted by: Janet on: December 29, 2007

The concept of the Decades ‘08 Challenge, explained here, intrigues me: read 8 books in 8 consecutive decades in ‘08. I’m in with the following list:

  1. 1890’s: The Picture of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde
  2. 1900’s: A Room With a View, E. M. Forster
  3. 1910’s: Herland, Charlotte Perkins Gilman
  4. 1920’s: Mrs. Dalloway, Virginia Woolf
  5. 1930’s: The Sword in the Stone, T.H. White
  6. 1940’s: The Ill-Made Knight, T.H. White
  7. 1950’s: The Martian Chronicles, Ray Bradbury

That’s it as it stands now. I’m looking forward to this!

Just got through reading the posts you’ve made while I’ve been gone. You’ve been busy! :-)

This reading challenge looks fun.

You’re a true friend, Ruth, reading all my blather. :-) Hope the beach was fun.

Do you ever do challenges–? I picked books for this one from the decades leading up to my birthday.

No, I’ve never done any of the reading challenges, though I see them all the time. I mostly just read whatever I happen upon. :-)

This year I was going to read War and Peace. I think I got 400 pages into it – but that’s not even a third of the way through! Now it’s been so long that I’ll have to start again.

There’s always the Henry Fonda – Audrey Hepburn movie…. (she says, wimpily). (I confess, it’s the only version I’ve ever made it through…)

Ahhh… Excellent challenges! I too am catching up on your blog over break. I have downloaded Dorian Gray in both text ebook format and audio. Have not started it yet. You other list is filled with “easy” books. This list looks a bit more challenging. My resolution is not so much as to take up any challenges, but to read all of the books piled up that I already have. It may take me all year. I’ve tried reading Moby Dick this year. I’m only a third through that. War and Peace is just not ever going to happen.

Enjoy the reading!

Maybe we can compare notes on Dorian Gray!

Yes, easy books in the other. But go easy on me–I’m making a commitment! :-)

I liked Moby Dick, but I doubt that I’ll ever reread it. It was so dense with symbolism it made my head hurt with “achings and breakings.”

Welcome to the challenge. I hope you have a great 2008!
