I’ve seen G.K. Chesterton’s “Evening” in several places lately, and I love its simple reverence. Said as I fall into bed at the end of a day, it disarms the usual barrage of remembered failings and things left undone that seem to cluster, waiting, around my pillow. What are some other good evening poems? I’d love to gather a few more.
The most authoritative source I could find online was the Blog of the American Chesterton Society. Here’s “Evening,” by G.K. Chesterton:
Here dies another day
During which I have had eyes, ears, hands
And the great world round me;
And with tomorrow begins another.
Why am I allowed two?
Poetry Friday is at Writing and Ruminating today.
Wonderful. I love Chesterton.
Lovely. Wow.
Lovely attitude of gratitude. What a sweet way of reminding us how blessed we are..
Thanks for this gem.
Yes, yes! Thanks for coming by my blog to specifically tell me about this one. With this at night, and the Barbara Ras poem in the morning, we’ll be encircled in gratitude the whole day.
I like that, Sara — “encircled in gratitude the whole day.”
Lovely choice!
