Literacy is alive and well

Posted by: Janet on: November 9, 2008

Today I went to the annual Penguin-Putnam booksale in my area. The road was so jammed with fellow bibliophiles, it took me an hour to drive the final mile. Then I took my place at the end of a half-mile line and stood outside for 50 minutes before entering the warehouse. Then I spent an hour and a half covering about half of the aisles before I was weighed down with all I could carry. Then (winding down now) I stood in line for another half an hour to pay. And then, at last, I went home.

Anyone who complains that books are losing their appeal in our culture has not been to this sale! But it was worth every minute. I may go back later in the week, because I never made it past the children’s and young-adult books. It wore me out, but it was worth every minute. For under $40.00, I hauled home this stack:

Plus a few freebies. It feels like Christmas! Not only do my kids have all these pages to adorn their shelves, but gas dropped another 2 cents while I was inside the sale. ‘Twas a great day indeed.

Good for you, Janet! If you had paid retail, you would’ve only gotten a couple of DK/Eyewitness books.

I love The Princess and Curdie! It’s a great follow up to The Princess and the Goblin.

wow- i’ve never been to one of those mainly because I don’t like crowds. But, good for you! What fun to get so many goodies for so little.

Deb, I might have avoided it on opening day if I’d realized the waiting involved! (Note to self: bring book to read in line next time.)

Lisa, I’ve not read any books with Curdie other than ‘The Princess and the Goblin.’ But in ‘That Hideous Strength,’ Ransom refers to “the Curdie books,” so I was pleased to see one at the sale!

Wow! What a glorious haul! Lovely. The DK books are the best, and you got a Jan Karon. Enjoy enjoy!

I realized I forgot to ask you about the sale! Glad you got some stuff. I’ve heard that Saturdays are the worst days to go. O well…what we sacrifice for books!

I confess, I went back last night again with the girls. They really wanted to see what the hubbub was about, and I decided to feed the flame of a passion for books.

I got the complete Beatrix Potter, marked $160, for $16. Lord, help me not to go back… ! So easy to become addicted!
