This seems to be an era of rereading for me. This week I finished C.S. Lewis’s That Hideous Strength and reviewed it at my book blog, Across the Page (which appears to be working again, and where I plan to continue posting). It’s one of those books that I despaired of writing fully about; I noticed a lot while reading it, but to try and record it all in a post would have been a marathon post that no one would have read. I think it wasn’t perfect as a work of literature, but I really enjoyed it anyway — just like so many people aren’t perfect, but I love them anyway!
Next, I reread Wendell Berry’s The Memory of Old Jack, which I finished last night and reviewed here. I’ve read all of Mr. Berry’s stories, and I think this is his best work of fiction. It moved me deeply when I read it the first time, and even moreso this time.
I also wrote this post for this month’s Celebrate the Author Challenge at Becky’s Book Reviews. This month is C.S. Lewis’s birthday, and I celebrated my longstanding appreciation for his books.
It’s been a fun time of nostalgia this last week or two, but now I’m ready to break some new ground and dig into Wendell Berry’s The Way of Ignorance– a book of essays that promises much to chew on regarding American culture. Somehow I’ve missed his last two essay collections (this one and Citizenship Papers), but they’re now safely stacked on my nightstand and calling my name.
With books on my nightstand, I am not slow; it’s hip hip hip, and away I go…
I read That Hideous Strength years ago and thought it was very good – maybe I should re-read it and see if I think the same now. I like C S Lewis’s non-fiction more than his novels, particularly Surprised By Joy and The Great Divorce.
I don’t know Wendell Berry’s books – I’ll look out for them.
That Hideous Strength has been on my list for a while now. I enjoyed Out of the Silent Planet very much, but I’ve got to admit that my enthusiasm waned somewhat after Voyage to Venus. I’m sure I’ll get to it sooner or later, but I’m having a lot of trouble picking it up.

It seems you had a great reading week. The Memory of Old Jack sounds good to me.
Here is my SS post
